The largest Retail store in the world, Walmart announced its customer can buy bitcoin at 200 of its retail locations in the U.S. Customers will be able to buy the cryptocurrency at Coinstar kiosks inside Walmart stores. Over 8,000 Coinstar kiosks sell bitcoin throughout its locations.
Bitcoin is now available to be purchased at Walmart’s 200 retail stores in the U.S., Walmart announced the news on Thursday. In coordination with Coinstar, which owns machines allowing customers to convert U.S. coins into paper bills or gift cards. The pilot program started in early October, said Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman.
Once a person has a Bitcoin wallet with the cryptocurrency Exchange Coinme, they’ll be able to buy Bitcoin at Coinstar kiosk within a participating Walmart. Purchasing Bitcoin will have an associated transaction fee of 4% and and Exchange fee of 7%. Once the purchase of Bitcoin is made, a voucher is dispensed allowing the holder to redeem Bitcoin on Coinme.
Coinstar with over 8,000 ATM kiosks, including the 200 Walmart locations partnered with Coinme cryptocurrency exchange and Walmart. Coinstar ATM kiosks are also located in other retail chains throughout the United States including grocery outlets, CVS, Hy-Vee, Winn-Dixie, Fresco y Mas, and Harveys.
Walmart is looking into whether cryptocurrency could align into the companies strategies for business. In August, the Walmart offered a career posting for the position of a “digital currency and cryptocurrency product lead.” In the posting Walmart stated, “As an expert in digital currencies / cryptocurrency and blockchain-related technologies, you will drive the vision for the product and capabilities roadmap.”
